Fortress Wireless Accessories! How Do They Work?

One of the many great aspects of Fortress Security Systems is the wireless accessories! There are a few things to know about the details of the wireless signals that are used by the system, and now is a great time to share those details with you.

Wireless Frequency (433 MHz and 315 MHz)

The accessories we provide use a 433 megahertz (MHz) frequency (and in some cases, 315 MHz). What does that mean? Well, that tells us that the average distance where you can get strong, reliable signals is about 150 feet away from the main panel. The signal can sometimes go farther than that, but it’s going to get exponentially weaker as we get farther away from the panel. This is what is known as the Inverse-Square Law.

The Signal Goes Through (Most) Walls!

The 433 MHz frequency also tells us a little something about how the signal travels. In other words, the signal can go through some walls if they’re made of drywall, but the signal would be blocked by a concrete or brick wall (or a sheet of metal). We also provide optional 433 MHz signal repeaters that can boost the signal strength and/or range.

There’s No Need to Interfere

The 433 MHz signal will not interfere with other radio or wireless signals that we commonly use in our day-to-day lives. For example, cellular phones use frequencies in the range of 850 MHz, or 1.9 GHz (1900 MHz). Wi-Fi or wireless internet signals use 2.4 GHz (2400 MHz) or 5 GHz (5000 MHz) signals. You can safely use your Fortress Security System in the same area as your cell phones and your Wi-Fi without any problems!
